The Woman at the Well
“Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, ‘Give Me a drink.’ For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, ‘How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?’ For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered and said to her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water…Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:5-10, 13-14).
Jesus is sitting at a well when a Samaritan woman approaches Him. He breaks a cultural barrier by asking her to give Him a drink of water from her bucket. At that time the Jewish people did not mingle with Samaritans. She is shocked at His request; but all along Jesus is talking to her not so much to get a drink of water, but to tell her about the salvation of God that is available to her.
When Jesus says to her: “if you knew the gift of God,” He is talking about eternal life and a personal relationship with God. Romans 6:23 tell us, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
When Jesus says “if you knew who it is that says to you give me a drink,” He is referring to Himself as the Savior of the World. Jesus came to save the lost; and the Samaritan woman was lost and she needed a Savior so that she could be saved and become a child of God.
“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10)
“And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.” (1 John 4:14)
Jesus offers the Samaritan woman living water to drink instead of the natural water she can provide for Him. Living water is a spiritual, supernatural flow of the life of God. Jesus tells her she can have a well full of the life of God. In another words, she can be saved and have eternal life.
God wants us to be saved just like the Samaritan woman at the well. He wants to give us living water. He wants us to be filled and not thirst again. Jesus wants to be our Savior. He paid the price for our sins so that we can be forgiven. He wants to give us eternal life.
We need to recognize who Jesus is and the price He paid for our sins. Jesus said to the Samaritan woman to ask Him for living water and He would give it to her. We need to ask Jesus to be our Savior. We need to respond to His offer of living water just like the woman at the well. He is waiting for us to ask Him to reveal Himself to us.
